What You Need to Know About ArcGIS Server Hosting

Posted by Jason Harris on Dec 22, 2015 7:31:05 AM

Are you considering moving your ArcGIS server hosting to the cloud?  The cost savings alone convince most, but the big question comes when you decide where your applications, infrastructure and data should live. While private hosting is always an option, it can be a costly operation to maintain if isn’t central to your business. There are endless public ArcGIS server hosting providers in the cloud, including the big boys like Amazon EC2, Azure, and Google, as well as many smaller outfits providing similar services.  So how do you choose which one is best for you? Unfortunately, there is no a one-size-fits-all solution. When choosing a provider for your ArcGIS related infrastructure, there are some key points to consider.

There are many components to the ArcGIS platform - and you may choose to move just some or all pieces to a cloud provider, and ArcGIS Server hosting is traditionally thought of as the most cloud-friendly component.

Questions to Consider for ArcGIS Server Hosting:

  • Do I have ArcGIS Licensing in place?
  • Do I have staff able to effectively manage the significant needs of an ArcGIS for Server installation (including Web server, Database Server, ArcGIS, etc)?
  • Can my organization afford a variable monthly budget?
  • Am I tech savvy enough to manage the launch and maintenance of a cloud-based server  (creating snapshots, launching instances, failover considerations, managing uptime, etc.)?
  • How often and how much data do I need to move to this off-premise system?
  • Do I have enough map services to make a full-blown ArcGIS Server license cost effective?

If you already have a license for ArcGIS Server, have the knowledge and staff to manage a full stack, and need to serve a large number of map services - a cloud-based ArcGIS for Server install makes a lot of sense. You will gain a lot of flexibility and have the ability to scale up or down rather quickly.  However if  you said no to any of the above questions, moving to a public cloud may not be the solution for you - at least for now.

Specialists in ArcGIS Server Hosting

ArcGIS for Server is a huge, feature-rich, and very capable platform, and with great capability comes great expense. Many organizations, be it large cities, private organizations or single developers, have GIS specific needs that can't be easily addressed by public cloud servers. If you don’t have the licensing and technical staff that will enable you to make the move, you’ll find that private specialized ArcGIS server hosting will make all the difference. There is no substitute for long-term experience managing the complex system of ArcGIS server hosting.
